President's Letter
Greetings and welcome back. I hope everyone has enjoyed their summer and tried to spend as many days outside as possible. With the dreadful baseball season almost behind us, we can look forward to a great fall season - in TMAC, of course.
As a new TMAC year starts, I would first like to thank Rob Chan for his past tenure as President. He has had 2 very successful years with many accomplishments that ensure the long-term success of TMAC. On a consolidated basis, TMAC came in at more than 20% better than budget which are great results from such a tough economic year.
The coming year will be exciting but a challenging one. In this economy, we are all feeling that we must do less with more (a bit of a cliché, I know). We are striving to make our monthly meetings worthwhile and the Windy City Summit providing can't-be-missed topics. If you have any topics that you feel should be covered or speakers that you can suggest, please pass along this information.
I encourage all of you to promote the value of TMAC to your managers and to other colleagues. You will find that networking with other treasury colleagues is invaluable especially in this every changing work environment and job market.
Below is a list of the Board Members and Committee Members for 2009-2010. I would like to thank these members for joining the Board and wanting to get more involved in the association.

Feature Member of the Month
Job Description:
I am currently working for RPA Consulting. (Now at Unitrin Corporation working as the Assistant Treasurer.) The global headquarters are in Vernon Hills and the key employee is.., well, me. The firm has expertise in lockbox, disbursements, Treasury Operations, escheatment, project management and banking services RFP activities. I most recently held an engagement at Zurich American Insurance Company for two years where I integrated a remote Treasury Operations function into the head office in Schaumburg. Earlier I worked at Allstate Insurance Company for nearly 30 years in a variety of finance functions - much of it in Treasury. I have worked with many banks and internal operations areas and was responsible for all receipts and disbursements (paper and electronic) for the enterprise. I managed all commercial banking relationships, handled the share repurchase program, credit facilities and managed a few billion dollar short term investment portfolio. I spearheaded numerous projects, some lasting several quarters affecting hundreds of employees and saving many millions in bank fees over the years. The Treasury management function reported to me and I always enjoyed the people, the deadlines and the robust nature of the area. The challenges were constant and invigorating. With millions of both receipt and disbursement items and also thousands of agent locations collecting cash, checks and plastic, there were always opportunities to increase funds availability, improve reconciliations and reduce bank fees.
Getting to Know You:
I am a lucky guy. I have a great wife (Denise and I are married 33 years now) and two terrific children (Tiffany and Greg) who are both graduated from college and hit the job market running. I grew up in Batavia, attended parochial grade schools, spent one year in a military academy in Aurora and then three at Batavia High School. I worked a lot, even bought and sold a dozen cars that I would fix up, so I always had a few dollars to spend and save. I enjoyed high school - I liked fast cars, playing sports and having lots of friends (I have been on the reunion committee every 5 years for, ahhh, a number of reunion events over time). I then went to Southern Illinois University and participated in as many student demonstrations as I could. I majored in English with a minor in Business and also Philosophy. I put myself through college (I did take out a huge loan for $2,000, my wife and I thought we would never be able to pay that thing off). I met Denise at SIU, got married after we graduated, bought a small townhome and started work at Allstate.
Neighborhood News:
We live in Vernon Hills and this is only our third house and likely the last one of this size. I play on a park district softball team with a bunch of knucklehead neighbors. We won the championship a few years ago, but our average age is over 50 so we are now becoming a good stat builder for the younger teams we play. Five of us now have our sons on the team and that makes it really fun anyway. I coordinate the drinks, food, bill payment and "liar's poker" game following every game. I like gardening, working with my hands and we have a great lot backing up to a forest preserve area.
Down Time:
I have recently read a number of books on strategic battles in history - so look out.., I know all the weak points over the centuries. My favorite activity is to watch movies with lots of popcorn and a beverage. I also do technical analysis of the stock market and have had my share of wins as a result.
Fun Facts:
BTW FYI, I was a CCM, now a CTP of the AFP and joined TMAC in circa 1990 AD. The monthly meetings are great for learning, discovering new venues and interacting with the wonderful professionals who are its members.
Back to Business:
Actually, I think everyone makes their own luck. I have been blessed with a reasonable amount of business success. When I trace it back I find the keys are: treat people with dignity and respect, shine a light on the best part of even a bad situation, work hard, work long, don't complain, don't gossip, own your failures while sharing your successes and know that in the end most all things become what you make of them.
