Feature Member of the Month
Rachel Miller
Association for Manufacturing Excellence,
Finance Manager
In Galveston, TX with a plate of my favorite food, boiled Crawfish.
Job Description:
AME is basically AFP for manufacturers although we don't have the same staff size as AFP, only 10 of us on the payroll so I pretty much do everything dealing with cash.
Getting to Know You:
My husband Rich and I met 20 years ago this month. He was in a band that was playing at a bar at Eastern Illinois University when I went down to celebrate my girlfriend's 21st birthday. Across a smokey bar, our eyes met..... doesn't it sound romantic? We now live in Arlington Heights and have one son, Mason, who just started 2nd grade. We have two cats, Fang and a new kitten named Toews. Fang is named after the Austin Ice Bats hockey team's mascot and Toews is after the Chicago Blackhawk's Captain.
Neighborhood News:
I moved to Chicago after college (Rich lived here) and have lived in the northwest suburbs, ever since. Currently we are in Arlington Heights in the neighborhood across from Pappadeaux. I walk my son to school, which is very close to the Metra and made it so convenient when I worked downtown.
Down Time:
As you can tell by the names of our cats, we are big hockey fans. Rich plays ice hockey. Mason plays roller hockey and Rich is his coach. I played floor hockey growing up (only girl on the team for 4 years) and played again after moving here with the Chicago Sports and Social club and one season with fellow TMAC member Dave Wilds. We frequently go to Blackhawk and Wolves games and in fact Rich proposed to me at a Chicago Wolves game the year the NHL was on strike. We are anxiously waiting for news about tickets for the NHL Winter Classic, Hawks vs. Wings on New Years Day at Wrigley field, so if anyone has any connections for tickets, LET ME KNOW!!
My husband is a great cook and Mason looks to be taking after his dad, so we like to spend time in the kitchen. My strong suit is purchasing the groceries and slicing and dicing. We are also Nascar fans and go to a few races each year.
Fun Facts:
I grew up outside of St Louis (my parents were Professors at SIU-Edwardsville) although we spent every summer in Texas. Both my parents were originally from Texas so when school would end (for them and us), we would drive to Houston to my grandparents' house. My folks would stay for about a week and then usually go travel abroad; my father doing research in South America and my mother touring with the American Guild of Organists. After about a month in Houston, my grandparents would drive me and my brothers to meet up with my other grandparents somewhere around Austin and we would travel back to their cattle ranch in Menard, Texas for another month before my folks would come back, stay for a week and then we would all travel back home. It was a great time for us, spending quality time with our grandparents and experiencing things that always made for a great "what I did over summer break" paper. Now that my parents have retired and moved to Austin, I remind them periodically to let me know when they are ready for a summer house guest.
Back to Business:
The best part of TMAC is the members. There are many times that something has come up at work where I am supposed to be the expert and I have e-mailed members and always get great feedback. Thanks for making me look so smart!!
Joining TMAC:
I joined Leaf Candy as a Treasury Analyst working for Scott Frasier who was a long time TMAC member. He brought me to a meeting during my second week and that is when I realized Treasury was for me! You guys are so much more fun than accountants.

Mason and I with Blackhawk great Bobby Hull.
