Chuck Malatesta
Malatesta Consulting, Consultant
Job Description:
Getting to Know You:
I've lived in the West Lawn neighborhood of Chicago (near Midway Airport) for most of my life. I have been single up until a few years ago when I finally married for the first time. My wife and I enjoy local Chicago cultural arts and entertainment, gourmet cooking - with my wife doing most of the work in this area, and travel domestically and internationally. I have traveled to 6 of the 7 continents - not having been to Antarctica.
Down Time:
I have always enjoyed living in Chicago due to its cultural diversity, the fact of it being a big bustling city surrounded by the great expanses of farmland (you have the best of both worlds), and due to the fact that most of my immediate family live in this area. I belong to the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Cultural Center and have varied interests in local history, attendance at musical and theater events at some out of the way venues like Fermi Lab and the College of DuPage and taking local day trips with the Art Institute and on my own to explore off-the-beaten path points of interest nearby. I also enjoy snow skiing after taking up this sport in mid-life. I have skied at most ski resorts in the Western USA and Canada, as well as, having skied many times in Europe from Andorra to Austria. This past ski season, I skied for the first time in the Eastern USA at Stowe, Vermont.
Fun Facts:
After graduating from undergraduate school in my early 20's, I volunteered as a U.S. Peace Corps teacher of Physics and Mathematics in Malaysia. After this two year teaching commitment, I took the long way home traveling for 4 months visiting Indonesia and the island of Bali, hitch-hiking across Australia and both islands of New Zealand and crossing the Pacific on various airplane flights stopping at the Fiji Islands, American Samoa, Hawaii and then visiting a relative in California before taking the train from the West Coast to Chicago. I lived and traveled away from family and friends for 2-1/2 + years. This travel at a young age gave me a great appreciation of how good we have it as Americans. Trying to continue to always give back something to society for the good life that I have, I currently volunteer at the Soup Kitchen of St. Stanislaus Kostka on the near north-side of Chicago and make three large pots of soup each week under the scrutiny of a nun, who I would categorize as the epitome of Sienfeld's "Soup Nazi". I guess this makes me the "Assistant Soup Nazi". I also volunteer at the Greater Chicago Food Depository regularly because I like the work that they do (gathering and distributing food for the hungary) and the fact that the Depository is located not too far from where I live.
Joining TMAC:
I first came into contact with TMAC in 1983 through a senior Treasury person at Illinois Bell who invited me to come as his guest to a handful of TMAC meetings. When this person retired from Illinois Bell (I think that this was around 1985) I replaced him as the Illinois Bell Telephone member of TMAC. I have enjoyed TMAC ever since and continue to be a member even paying the annual dues from my own funds. I also enjoy the work of Treasury Management and the camaraderie of fellow TMAC members.
I am in the twilight of my Treasury career and currently do Treasury consulting assignments and contact work when I can get them. Prior to my Treasury consulting career, I worked in various Treasury positions at the local telephone company -- Illinois Bell and Ameritech for 20 years. In my last position on Ameritech's corporate staff, I was responsible for all short-term borrowing and investing, managing portfolios that varied from 100's of millions to a few billion dollars at any one time. I enjoyed my final position immensely, but was laid off from this job when Ameritech was acquired by SBC Corporation (now called AT&T after further mergers). After this, I worked a brief time at Aon Corporation as the Manger of Treasury Operations before setting into temporary Treasury work. If any TMAC member is in need of someone for a temporary assignment, please keep me in mind.
